Writer's Notebook

Another exciting component of Writing Workshop - our very own writer’s notebook.

In his book, A Writer’s Notebook: Unlocking the Writer Within You, Ralph Fletcher, an author and writing mentor, explains what a writer’s notebook is in a perfect way:

“Writers are like other people, except for at least one important difference. Other people have daily thoughts and feelings, notice the sky or that smell, but they don’t do much about it. All those thoughts, feelings, sensations, and opinions pas through them like the air they breathe.

A writer’s notebook gives you a place to live like a writer, not just in school during writing time, but wherever you are, at any time of day.”

Your child’s writer’s notebook will be the most essential tool he/she will have as a writer. Being that we will write in these notebooks everyday, your child will keep his/her writer’s notebook in class. If your child wishes, he/she can write in his/her notebook at home; however, his/her writer’s notebook must be returned to school the very next day.

Your child's notebook should be decorated with photographs of special people, pets, places, ticket stubs, and any other artifact that is meaningful to him/her. These decorations should have the potential to inspire ideas for writing. These notebooks will be a special place where each child can hold their most special ideas.

An exciting writing adventure awaits...
